Batemans
Sissinghurst Castle
George Stone Limited has proudly undertaken numerous projects at Batemans, the historic home of Rudyard Kipling. Our work has included full external decoration of Park Mill, Mill Cottage, Corner Cottage, and Oast Cottage, ensuring these important buildings are preserved for future generations.
We also carried out essential repairs to the pump house and, in 2008, created a commemorative rose garden, blending craftsmanship with sensitivity to the site’s heritage.
This project highlights our ability to deliver high‑quality restoration and decorative works at prestigious heritage properties.
George Stone Limited has provided routine maintenance across the estate, including internal and external decoration of cottages and the complete refurbishment and redecoration of the restaurant.
One of the most involved contracts was the redecoration of the cowls at the castle. This delicate process required the cowls to be carefully removed, cleaned, redecorated, and replaced — ensuring the historic features were preserved while restoring them to their full glory.
This project demonstrates our ability to deliver both everyday maintenance and highly specialised heritage restoration with equal care and professionalism.
Agricultural Barn in Winchelsea
Crutches Farm is a mid-18th century farmstead with a Grade II listed farmhouse and historic agricultural buildings, part of the Wickham Manor Estate in Winchelsea. It reflects the area’s hop-growing past and remains a notable heritage site in East Sussex. We were contracted to erect a new agricultural building inclusive of associated ground, drainage and resurfacing works. This building is for the purpose of over-wintering the Herefords which normally roam freely on the estate.
Bodiam Castle – Tea Rooms
Birling Gap Hotel
George Stone Limited was contracted to refurbish and redecorate the tea rooms within the castle grounds, ensuring a welcoming and refreshed space for visitors. In addition, we carried out the external redecoration of the local Inn, preserving its character while enhancing its appearance.
This project demonstrates our ability to deliver high‑quality refurbishment and decorative works in heritage and hospitality environments, balancing practicality with sensitivity to historic surroundings.
George Stone Limited completed a 3‑month contract at the Birling Gap Hotel, involving the complete strip‑out and renovation of the restaurant, kitchen, and bar.
The project required careful planning and execution to modernise the facilities while ensuring the hotel maintained its welcoming atmosphere. This refurbishment demonstrates our expertise in hospitality projects, delivering high‑quality finishes within strict timeframes.
Sheffield Park
We are fortunate to have worked previously at this park, where our projects have included external redecorations of the cottages, as well as redecoration and repairs to the shop, reception, office, and gardener’s compound. In addition, we have carried out essential maintenance on the park’s bridges, ensuring both their safety and longevity. Toilet refurb in 2025.
Bodiam Castle
From little acorns oak trees grow, then sadly sometimes they come crashing down on your workshop!
We’ve had the pleasure of working with National Trust for the last 25 years and this project at Bodiam Castle involved the construction of a new Grounds Maintenance Workshop. From a plan drawn by Will Past, Senior Facilities Co-ordinator, to completion there were a number of challenges. Articulated lorries having to be reversed down winding country lanes and the manoeuvring of a 10,000 gallon rainwater harvesting tank by telehandler are just two to mention. We were delighted to be invited to the big unveiling and to celebrate with Will who has completed 40 years with the Trust. Very fitting that the new workshop has been named after him.
